Whiplash is a common injury that occurs during accidents. It is caused by the neck being thrust rapidly in one direction and then suddenly in another. Although it is often the result of an auto accident, it can occur from a sports injury and other activities. If you suspect that you are suffering from whiplash and live in or around Port St. Lucie, Palm Beach Gardens, or Jupiter, contact our chiropractors at Papa Chiropractic and Physical Therapy.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Whiplash is often characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Stiffness and pain in the neck
  • Pain that extends to the shoulders, arms, and upper back
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Extreme fatigue

Diagnosing Whiplash

When you visit a chiropractor after an auto accident injury, we examine the entire spine. This is because even if you feel pain in only one area, several areas may be damaged. Sometimes, you do not feel pain from an injury until days, weeks, or even months later. To be safe, we will examine your spine as a whole for a variety of issues, including:

  • Limited joint movement
  • Disc injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Muscle spasms

Our chiropractor will use diagnostic techniques and feel for tenderness and stiffness. We will also check your posture and your spinal alignment by watching how you walk. We may also have x-ray images taken  to gain a full understanding of the impact of your auto accident injury.

Treatment for Whiplash Injuries

There are several treatments for whiplash, depending on the severity of the condition, your pain, and your needs. These treatments include:

  • Spinal manipulation
  • Muscle stimulation, relaxation, or a combination of the two
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Ergonomic changes
  • Exercise and stretching programs

Dr. Papa and our team at Papa Chiropractic and Physical Therapy will perform a full evaluation to determine your health needs. From that, we will create a customized treatment plan to provide pain relief and support the healing process.
