Do you ever feel a pain in your lower back that seems to radiate down your leg? Does it occur more on one side than the other? You may be suffering from sciatica. If you are looking for a Jupiter chiropractor, a Palm Beach Gardens chiropractor, or a Port St Lucie chiropractor, Papa Chiropractic & Physical Therapy is ready to assist you. Sciatica is when the large sciatic nerve in your lower back is irritated in some way. It can cause mild to severe pain, numbness, and even weakness in your leg. It may be caused by a herniated disk, bone spur, or spinal stenosis. While sciatica responds well to chiropractic care, there are also adjustments you can make to avoid sciatic nerve pain.

Potential Sciatica Triggers

Wearing high heel shoes or shoes without cushions may cause your sciatica to act up. High heels tend to shift your weight forward, causing your pelvic muscles to stretch your hamstrings. Since the sciatic nerve runs the same path as your hamstring, this stretching can irritate the sciatic nerve. Sitting for long periods with a cellphone or bulky wallet in your back pocket can also aggravate sciatic pain.

Tight jeans and tight underwear have also been known to constrict your muscles, thus putting pressure on the sciatic nerve and causing pain. Elevated stress levels can also cause your sciatica to flare up. Some doctors believe stress can cause your brain to cut off oxygen to your nerves, resulting in pain, weakness, and sometimes the electrical shock sensation associated with sciatica.
